There is a new CTWW post up on Eco-Crap, so click to read.

I used to have many separate blogs, but rather than repeat that exercise for Google to destroy again, I have added the blogs as separate pages here on the Top Bar. I will add past posts as I recover them from other sources, but will also add new posts as the occasion arises; so always check, there's bound to be something new.

You are practically "off the grid". :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen CFLs first showed up here, they weren't very good. They were expensive, they didn't last and the light was obnoxious. They have improved, however. They still are a bit more expensive than regular bulbs but they now last and last (my current bulbs have lasted 5+ years). The light is also nicer ... not so harsh. As for what they do to brain cells ... hmmm ... my bwain smeens to be vorking jist vine. :-)
If your bulbs only lasted a few weeks, you should have taken them back and demanded a refund! We got quite cross when a couple failed after a few years, but with two house moves in that time, we thought maybe that was more than usual wear and tear. That thing about brain functioning is a load of rubbish. Trust me, I'm a psychologist ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about your list of appliances. Ours is similar, but one of our biggest electricity consumers is the washing machine. How do you do your laundry?
@SF, yes, pretty close to being 'off the grid.' Here they are expensive and the light is still obnoxious. I have seen no improvements. 5+ years is good going, damn good. As for the damage to bwainz, I still haven't sought more info yet, but I will; it is similar to the problems encountered with TV frequency waves, which I read is worse with the advent of LCD Flat screens. Apparently it is more conducive with subliminal messaging.

@Rachel, thanks for the comment. Consumer protection here is a relatively new thing. I surprised myself last week by returning a battery recharger and after a lengthy discussion actually got my money back. Hmmm, the psychologist bit interests me trust and psychologist, uhm, wouldn't that be an oxymoron? LOL
ReplyDeleteLaundry, by hand, washing board, simple detergents, no fabric softeners and line dried in the sun (which Rio normally has plenty of) and the grey rinse water (not soapy) goes straight on to the garden.

ps, sorry about the oxymoron gag, couldn't resist it.
It is interesting to see the different perspectives and information on CFLs since they emerged years ago. I would presonally like to see more efforts go into mainstreaming LEDs.
ReplyDelete@Brenna, during my wanderings I found some info on LEDs, but when I opened the site, it shut my pc down, I never went back. But it appears as though they are the next logical step. Thanks fr the visit and comment.
